چکیده

This experiment varied whether individuals interacted with virtual representations of themselves or virtual representations of others in an immersive virtual environment. In the self representation condition, half of the participants interacted with a self representation which bore photographic resemblance to them, whereas the other half interacted with a self representation that bore no resemblance to them. In the other representation condition, participants interacted with a representation of another individual. The experimental design was a 2 (participant gender: male vs. female) x 3 (agent identity: high similarity self representation vs. low similarity self representation vs. other representation). Overall, participants displayed more intimacy-consistent behaviors for representations of themselves than others. Implications of using immersive virtual environment technology for studying the self are discussed.

The Proteus Effect: The Effect of Transformed Self-Representation on Behavior

Virtual environments, such as online games and web-based chat rooms, increasingly allow us to alter our digital self-representations dramatically and easily. But as we change our self-representations, do our self-representations change our behavior in turn? In 2 experimental studies, we explore the hypothesis that an individual’s behavior conforms to their digital self-representation independen...

Running head: HOW IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS FOSTER SRL 1 How Immersive Virtual Environments Foster Self-Regulated Learning

Over the past decade, immersive virtual environments have been increasingly used to facilitate students’ learning of complex scientific topics. The non-linearity and open-endedness of these environments create learning opportunities for students, but can also impose challenges in terms of extraneous cognitive load and greater requirements for self-regulated learning (SRL). SRL is crucial for ac...

Short- and long-term effects of embodied experiences in immersive virtual environments on environmental locus of control and behavior

Immersive virtual environments (IVEs) allow individuals to see, hear, and feel digital stimuli as if they were in the physical world. Two studies tested the power of embodied experiences within IVEs by comparing the effects of cutting a virtual tree against reading a print description or watching a video depiction of the tree-cutting process to encourage paper conservation. Experiment 1 found t...

Experiencing Nature: Embodying Animals in Immersive Virtual Environments Increases Inclusion of Nature in Self and Involvement With Nature

Immersive virtual environments (IVEs) produce simulations that mimic unmediated sensory experiences. 3 experiments (N = 228) tested how different modalities increase environmental involvement by allowing users to inhabit the body of animals in IVEs or watch the experience on video. Embodying sensory-rich experiences of animals in IVEs led to greater feeling of embodiment, perception of being pr...
